Nutrition For Kids: Laying Down a Foundation for Total Wellness
Providing good nutrition for kids is the best investment you will ever make in your child's health. With good nutrition you will help reduce many of the risk factors seen by many of our children including:
- the risk of being overweight
- the risk for blood sugar imbalances
- the risk for poor bone development
- poor nutrition resulting in a deficiency of the building blocks for good growth and development
Nutrition for Kids: Dietary Recommendations
The following are some recommendations that will go far in laying down a good foundation for a healthy diet and lifestyle.
- Offer a variety of foods to encourage good eating habits later. One of the biggest mistakes that I see parents make is to let little Johnny dictate what is served because he is a picky eater. You must offer a variety of foods even if he does not like them. Eventually he will try something new especially if he is hungry enough. This is why it is important to have structured eating times.
- You can help promote good nutrition by setting a good example yourself by eating healthy foods and avoiding the junk.
- Healthy eating habits and regular exercise should be a regular part of your family's life. It is much easier if everyone in the house follows the same guidelines, than if your child has to do it alone.
- Avoid highly processed foods that are high in high fructose corn syrup
(HFCS)
and salt and
trans saturated fats.
- Feed your kids meat from
organic grass fed beef.
and wild caught fish not farmed fish. Both of these have high levels of omega 3s which you and your kids are not getting enough of. Higher levels of these in your diet will minimize inflammation which is a leading cause of many health problems even for kids.
- Replace soft drinks (whether diet or regular), and fruit juices, with pure, clean water. This will go far in preventing cavities and is healthier.
- Never, and I mean never, give your kids artificial sweeteners. They are neurotoxins (poisonous to your nerves). I don't recommend that adults use them either!
- Dairy products or at least good sources of absorbable calcium are a very important part of a healthful diet for growing kids. The whole issue of dairy products is controversial at best. Read this article:

is a wise investment. Kids are growing rapidly and because of some of the challenges with picky eaters, allergies, not eating enough fruits and veggies and poor quality produce buying a good quality supplement makes sense.
