Minerals Nutrition: A Mineral Supplement With Plant Nutrients for Wellness Sake

For optimal minerals nutrition you need a mineral supplement. Here's why. Minerals have been depleted from our soil. If soil has very few minerals in it especially when food is conventionally grown, how can they be found in your food? Impossible!

More than 20 years ago, a large study showed nutrient deficiencies in as high as 80% of the U.S. population. This study only looked at 12 of 45 essential nutrients. It was estimated that 2 million people died from nutrition deficiencies.

This is a staggering statistic. You can bet that our soil has not improved in the last 20 years. More likely, it has been further depleted.

So, why are minerals so important to your health?

There are 2 kinds of minerals:

  • Macrominerals - calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and sulfur
  • Trace minerals - there are more than 30 including iron, iodine, cobalt, boron, copper, selenium and zinc

Some of the diverse functions of these nutrients include:

  • vital for strong bones and teeth, heart and nervous system
  • muscle growth and contraction
  • acid-alkaline balance
  • enzyme activity
  • blood pressure control
  • fluid balance
  • formation of blood
  • activate enzymes for healthy digestion
  • energy production

These functions are very important for your survival and long term good health.

Any deficiency of these requires the need for a mineral supplement.

The following is a brief minerals nutrition discussion.

These are the different forms of mineral supplements:

    • mineral salts - these are minerals that come from the ground and are combined with an acid. These are very inexpensive, poorly absorbed and found in the most popular supplements e.g. calcium citrate

    • colloidal minerals - very tiny inorganic minerals that supposedly allows for them to be suspended in a solution making them easier to be absorbed. There are no studies that support this claim. They are not standardized, so you have no idea how much is there. These products may contain an abundance of minerals that can be toxic in large amounts, e.g. silver, aluminum

    • chelated minerals - an inorganic mineral that is bound to a chelator such as an organic acid or amino acid. Supposedly the presence of the acid improves absorption in the intestine. There are problems with this: these bonds can be broken down before being absorbed, and how well chelated the mineral is.

    • ionic minerals - the theory here is that the presence of a electrical charge makes absorption more likely. However, the presence of a charge does not guarantee passage into the intestines.

    • plant "predigested' minerals - best absorption by far, only problem is the inability to standardize minerals from plants.................until very recently with the development of a new patented technology.

The most important point to know about minerals nutrition is that your body will better absorb anything from plants and not so with synthetics.

    Identifying Synthetic Supplements

It is very easy to identify the presence of synthetics in your supplement. Though most companies will not teach you this for fear that you would not buy their products!

You'll be surprised at how easy it is to identify whole food vs. synthetic supplements.

Even as a Dietitian I didn't know how to tell! Well the secret is out and you will want to know how to protect your family and your pocket book!
