Eating Healthy Diets is Expensive: Fact or Fiction

eating healthy diets

Eating healthy diets is too expensive is one of the most common complaints that I hear from my clients. I have to admit that I thought the same thing until I did some research and my own study.

I'd like to share the results of Colleen Huber of Naturopathyworks. She compared the cost of meals using processed foods (time-saving) and meals made from organic whole foods.

I was expecting the healthier meals to be more expensive. Surprise! The healthier organic, whole foods were less expensive not by much but, it was less to eat the more nutritious foods.

The comparison was: $123.64 for the processed meals vs. $122.42 for the whole foods. This was for a family of 3 for 1 week.

This really defies what most people believe about healthier eating. So now, the question is why aren't more people choosing to eat healthier less processed foods?

There are several different answers to this:

  • Misconception that eating healthier will be more expensive

  • Relying on processed foods makes meal preparation less time consuming

  • Lack of resources including great cookbooks that make healthier cooking a breeze. Cooking is quickly becoming a lost art form. A sad fact today is that many people are not cooking anymore. Many people rely on prepared and processed foods which are expensive.

Now for my experiment.

By giving up most processed foods I was able to reduce our food budget in half. My food budget dropped to $150 per week for a family of 3. So this is not far off from Colleen Huber's example.

So, if you are not eating as healthy as you could be, why not? I've just addressed the issue of cost. If this is your primary objection you now have the evidence that eating healthy diets does not have to be more expensive.

Make a commitment to yourself to begin the process of eating a healthier diet TODAY. In the long run, it will be less expensive and better for your long term health!
