Is Your Definition of Wellness Needing an Overhaul?
Is your definition of wellness the lack of symptoms? If so, there is compelling evidence to make you think again!
Let's review some of the facts around most people's definition of wellness and why a new definition is in order!
During the U.S. Olympic marathon trials a 28 year old male athlete in the best shape of his life, dropped dead at mile 5.There really were no warning signs that this young, very fit male had a massive heart condition. So, is the lack of symptoms really how wellness should be defined? Unfortunately, the majority of folks use lack of symptoms and feeling well as their definition of wellness. For example, in 1997, an assessment was done by the New Zealand government asking the question 'Do you think you are well?' An amazing 85% of citizens said that they were healthy! Now let's look at the real statistics: - 16% of them had asthma
- 60% were seeing their doctor 2-5 times a year
- 69% were taking at least one prescription drug
- 40% were being treated for a long-term or debilitating illness
Hmmm. How can this be? Simply, because they believe that being symptom free is being healthy. Even if the only reason they have no symptoms is a drug. (Remember drugs suppress symptoms. They DO NOT fix the underlying issue! They merely mask the problem.) Unfortunately that is also the opinion of all too many doctors. Let's look at some hard facts about feeling fine. When a virus or bacteria first enters your body you feel fine. In the early stages of a health challenge you may feel fine. So feeling fine is not an assurance that you are healthy. In the U.S. 1 in 2 Americans will get heart disease. In 50% of those cases the first symptom is death. It is a silent killer. In the case of the Olympic athlete, in spite of his fitness, he did not get a second chance! His family was devastated! Are you thinking it's the other person who will develop a heart condition? Heart condition isn't only about diet or lack of exercise! A heart condition often results from free radical oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is the principle cause of premature aging, mutated cells, heart problems,.... Antioxidants and
anti-aging nutritional supplements
play a key role in minimizing this process. So nutrition is the #1 factor in wellness that is most often overlooked, especially by doctors. Good health begins at the smallest unit of the body, the cell. If you have healthy cells, it follows that you will have healthy organs, healthy systems and finally, a healthy body. Meeting the needs of all cells will result in optimal health and wellness.
