Buying Local Food: For Your Health and the Local Economy

When buying local food you really should feel good about all of the benefits that you are receiving as well as the local economy. These are some of the benefits that you will reap.

  1. You support the local economy when you are buying food that is produced locally. By doing so you support a dying breed of farmers. It's true produce grown by small farmers is more expensive but the benefits outweigh the costs.

  2. The quality of this produce surpasses the quality of fruits and veggies from the chain grocery stores. It's fresher, better tasting, has higher nutrient density. Consider that most food travels 1500 miles or more to get to your plate.

  3. Local farms to not have access to GMO seeds. These farmers are concerned about preserving the biodiversity of their crops and doing what is best for their land. You may find heritage crops that you otherwise won't find at your grocer.

  4. Local farms preserve land in your community, ensuring that farmers will be able to continue to afford their land and not sell off to large development companies.

  5. You'll support a cleaner environment. Because farmers live on the land they have a vested interest, usually adding to the quality of the land and not raping the land like industrial farms with the use of toxic chemicals.

  6. You invest in the future, by supporting your local farmer. If farmers can make a liveable wage they will continue growing crops for their communities, including your children and grandchildren.

  7. You can sleep better at night because you know where your food is coming from and how it is being produced. Not so with foods in the grocery store. Very few cases of food contamination are reported among small farmers.

Buying local food has many health, economic and environmental benefits and is a win-win for all who participate.
