Benefits of Dietary Supplements: How Long before You Can Expect to Have Results?
Benefits of dietary supplements vary greatly from person to person. As a nutritionist, one of the most frequently asked questions that I get is: "How long before I can expect to see results from taking these supplements?"This is a good question especially if you are devoting extra time and money to something that you believe supports good health. You'd like some sort of feedback that your efforts are paying off. If you have ever been on a drug, for the most part, you probably experienced a rather quick response. And the response was what you'd expect since drugs change the chemistry of your body to cause a desired response. For example, coumadin is a blood thinner. Should you cut yourself you will bleed and it will take longer for your blood to clot. This happens as a result of chemical changes that happen in your body. Those changes can also cause side effects that can have serious problems. In the case of coumadin, hemorrhage is a possible side effect. Before drugs are approved by the FDA they are given an
LD50
level. During the trials, it is determined what level of the drug will kill 50% of the rats. All drugs are classified this way. In fact, the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. includes side effects caused by legally prescribed medications.
Nutrition provides the tools or building blocks for your body to make healthy cells which leads to healthy organs and then healthy systems and finally a healthy body. Plus, you support the natural processes and chemistry of the body that enable it to repair and restore itself without dangerous side effects.
Factors that Affect Benefits of Dietary Supplements
With nutrition the outcome is not always predictable and it can vary from person to person. There are various factors that affect how long before you see benefits of vitamins:
- Lifespan of the cells we're talking about. For example, red blood cells live about 4 months. If you had iron deficiency and started a program to increase your iron, it would be 4 months before you could expect to see a real difference.
- Rate of cell turnover. Younger people often see quicker responses because their cells turnover faster than someone who is elderly.
- Other factors that can impact response include:
- lack of
digestive enzymes
that breakdown nutrients making them not absorbed by your body
- stress that depletes nutrients more quickly
- smoking that adds to the toxic load of your body
- lousy diet
- poor sleep which also contributes to stress
Usually, you can expect it will take about 6 months or more to see real long lasting benefits of dietary supplements you are taking. Nutrients are not drugs so your patience is required. The results will be worth it and you'll avoid nasty side effects.
